Minangkabaunese Tradition of Out-Migration (Merantau) in Indonesia: Hamka’s Novels on Reality

The study aims at identifying and describing the phenomena of out-migration (merantau) conducted by Minangkabaunese in Hamka’s novels Tenggelamnya Kapal van der Wijck Merantau ke Deli as a reflection reality. Etymologically, word merantau does not simply mean migration; it is concept with cultural values norms having no equivalent meaning another language. research holistically done means descriptive qualitative method on consideration that discussions analysis are concerned societal portraits which to be revealed improve thinking horizon public about (merantau). data taken from supported instrument form interview. results show has become heritage for caused economic, social factors. major characters experience financial difficulties space find decent work very limited their hometown. paradigm every man do factors signifying matrilineal system order get bright future they have well educated while proper education yet available place. Therefore, summing up goals gain knowledge, experience, status, prosperity conduct mission.
